You Can’t Mix Up a CalCo Cutaway
Posted on October 18th, 2011 No commentsThere are many reasons why CalCo has been a leader in the cutaway business for decades and why so many clients keep coming back. The most important reasons are our knowledge, skill, and attention to detail which make a CalCo cutaway stand out above and beyond expectations. Another reason is our ability to listen and work with clients to achieve the optimal and desired finished product. Working with our clients to achieve the desired results is a cornerstone of our business and one of the main reasons that our clients return. We use our extensive mechanical knowledge to show your product to its full advantage while telling the story that your marketing department wants to highlight.
We were recently asked to create a cutaway of a mixer, seen below, that would be displayed at one of the biggest fluid handling trade shows in the country. It was on display at the WEFTEC show in Los Angeles.

The company conveyed to us how they wanted the mixer to look, including cut area and color scheme matching, we replicated those instructions and included this rail and T block support system which resembles the system used in the field. The company got exactly what they were looking for and we got another satisfied customer. At CalCo exceeding expectations is what we strive to do for all of our customers. We want to give you the best display possible so that you and your product look good. If you need help with a display please contact CalCo at 847/639-3858 or click here for more contact information. Subsea Oil Bundle Displays: Exploring New Options
Posted on April 26th, 2011 No commentsSince the beginning, people have always been fascinated by exploring. Finding new places, discovering new information through unique ideas, and embracing the entire journey to which we reach our goals and expectations is why we keep seeking. And two of the most essential elements of accomplishing these feats is first equipping ourselves with the proper tools; and second, convincing others that the task at hand is obtainable.
These ideas come to mind because a major issue that we are dealing with throughout the world right now is oil, its discovery and the many technologies existent and emerging for acquiring it. Over the past several months CalCo has received many requests to dissect oil equipment, mainly the subsea tubing used to extract oil from depths of the oceans that are hard to even fathom. This brings us to the two points we mentioned earlier:
Tools As you can see from the pictures below we have cutaway this tubing to show the intricate hoses and materials with which they are made. There are many different styles which serve different functions. Companies are persistently trying to find the most effective and, most importantly, safest ways to provide consumers with petroleum.

Innovation and Technique Once the tools have been established there is the need to show others that, in this case, the product is effective and separates itself from others in the same field. With these tools cut away you can easily describe the functionality and superior edge over the competition and show that in the end they will be the reason the job will get done right!
Like many before and after us, CalCo looks forward to any task that is put in front of us. So whatever the job may be, CalCo will find a creative and effective way for you to demonstrate your objective to help us all move forward. Power Tool Cutaways
Posted on March 22nd, 2011 No comments

Close up of Tool Cutaway
Any kind of product can benefit from a cutaway
People are always interested in seeing how a product works and a cutaway can be especially useful to show your product’s benefits or competitive advantages. Even every day products like power tools can be cutaway and because almost everyone has used a power tool they are happy and curious to see how it works. At a trade show, on a sales call or even in the hardware store these cutaways make your product visible, comprehensible and the center of attention.
A cutaway may take the mystery out of your product but that is the point. If you are afraid to show how your product works, customers can get worried that you are hiding something. When you are open to showing the fundamentals of your product then customers are often more willing to give your product a try. By letting your customer see how your product functions, the quality of the interior parts and the advantages your product has over the competition your product can sell itself.

Frequently Asked Questions about CalCo Cutaways
Posted on September 29th, 2010 No commentsHow much do CalCo’s services cost?
Each project is different and is priced according to man hours involved, materials for bases, shipping containers or electrical parts, and outside services like plating. We provide quotes based upon our estimates of time and material to do each job.
How long does it take?
A good rule of thumb is to plan ahead. Some projects can be turned around in a week or two, and some can be 90 days, depending upon the project. When production levels are high, lead times are longer, and it is always a good idea to get a no obligation quote in advance. Our average turnaround time is 4-6 weeks but it is entirely dependent on our schedule at the time that your project arrives. If necessary and if physically possible, we will adjust our schedule to meet yours and once we commit to a delivery date, you can count on it.
What do you need from me to provide a quote for my cutaway project?
The best and most effective way is to send the part with a description of the work you want done. If your product or part is very large, transportation can be difficult, so typically we like to have a dimensional drawing along with weights and the primary materials of the product (carbon steel, stainless, aluminum, etc.) A photo of the product is always helpful as well, along with a description of the areas you are looking to feature. With this information we can provide an accurate estimate, which can be confirmed upon receipt of the actual product.
How do I specify where to cut on my product?
Generally, you will receive the best cutaways if you tell us what features you want to show and leave the specific cutting designs to our skilled technicians. They have the knowledge and experience to show and retain components in such a way as to show what you want in the best and least expensive way. We strive to show as much as possible in one view with as simple a cut as possible.
If I can do all or some of the work in-house, shouldn’t I?
There are three ways of looking at this question:
Financially: Because we specialize in making cutaways and displays, we are pretty darn good (and efficient) at it. Therefore, it generally takes our experts less time to do a cutaway so we are almost always less expensive than full or even incremental in-house costs.Quality Control: We provide all cutting, clearancing, finishing and final fitting, plus basemounts and shipping containers. All these services must be coordinated, anticipating the needs of the others. At Calco you get a one stop shop that will handle all of these needs for you. We have the tools necessary to do the job right and the expertise and knowledge to make it look great.
Resources: Just because you can do something doesn’t mean that it is the best use of your resources (time and talent). Most companies are continuously assessing what they should and can do well, and then outsourcing the rest.

Motorize and Protect Your Trade Show Display
Posted on April 13th, 2010 No comments

Do you have a display that could be telling a more compelling story than it already is? That is what happened here. Recently, a display was sent to CalCo to be upgraded. We were asked to add a motor to the unit so it could be seen in action.
Often times, when a cutaway is motorized and in motion, it turns into a hazard to those viewing it. Protective shields are commonly added over the moving parts to protect the unit from being handled and to protect the people around it from being injured. This particular product was even tilted and elevated to make more of the working components easy to view.
The beauty of a motorized display is that it not only GRABS ATTENTION but it can visually demonstrate your product without a salesman or literature. Sometimes a good look is worth a thousand words.
Reworking or repurposing an existing display can save your organization money and give your exhibit new life. Do you have a seasoned display that needs to be updated or even motorized? Give CalCo a call at 847/639-3858 right now to discuss the options available to make your display capture your customers attention and keep it!

Cutaways: Tips for Maximizing this Unique Tool
Posted on June 25th, 2009 No comments
Of the many ways available to explain the benefits and advantages of your product line to people, you probably already know that there is a great deal of value in getting the actual product into the hands of potential clients or investors, right?
Cutaways are about the highest form of education mixing with a “real world” feel that is available for many physical products.
There is a significant advantage that is gained by giving someone this physical connection with your products. Are you maximizing the edge that this type of hands on experience can give??
Let’s look at many of the people can benefit from the educational nature of this type of tool:
- The end user (educational and memorable)
- The potential and current investor
- The sales person (descriptive and interactive)
- Trade show staff and visitors (draw and discussions)
- Field service personnel (education)
- Your end user’s service department
- Distributor networks (point of purchase)
- Website visitors
- Direct mail recipients
- Marketing department (website and brochure/catalog development)
- Investor relations representative
Many companies are only taking advantage of a slim cross section of these opportunities, and some are taking advantage of close to all of them. . .
Even a single cutaway can be used in almost all of these areas if managed correctly. Most times it makes sense to make these educational tools widely available, as knowledge leads to understanding, and let’s face it, when everyone knows why your products are the best, your main focus will be on filling orders!!
