  • Cutaway FAQ

    What is a cutaway?

A cutaway is a model or display that shows the advantages, internal components, and functions of a product. Cutaways are unique tools that differentiate a product from the crowd and they’re great to use at trade shows, trainings and more.

What are the benefits of using a cutaway for a business?

A cutaway is a great visual and interactive tool for employees in training, potential customers, and any other parties interested in your product. A cutaway highlights the advantages of a product including what it will look like, the quality of the materials inside and how the actual parts of the product function so a person is able to see, interact with, and learn about your product’s purpose.

What is the process like to create a cutaway?

A cutaway is made by first disassembling the product’s interior parts and cleaning them. Once the parts have been cleaned and reassembled, the cutting begins. It’s important to slice the cutaway with a technique that maximizes the visibility of the interior parts and its functions, without altering or damaging the product. Once the cutting is completed, the cutaway is painted with an eye-catching color scheme to highlight various parts of the product.

What are CalCo’s capabilities regarding cutaways?

We do everything from the design and development of a cutaway to the physical cutting of the product—we’re capable of cutting virtually any material of any thickness—to the painting of the finished product. The sky is the limit. We’re open to new innovations and are passionate about producing unique cutaways that our customers love and are 100% satisfied with.

    What is CalCo’s turnaround time?

Turnaround time varies based on the size of the project and our schedule, but typical turnaround is four to six weeks. We will adjust our schedule to meet your deadline needs whenever possible. The best and most effective way for us to get a project done is to have as much information as possible regarding the cutaway design. For example, sending the part(s) and description of work to be done on the part(s), any images with scale and weight information, and the type of materials to use on the project will be extremely helpful in not only creating the perfect cutaway you envisioned, but speeding up the communication process so we can get into production. The more details and information provided for the project, the better. And remember, we enjoy and are always willing to get involved with the design and development process.

How does CalCo ship a cutaway?

We offer different shipping container solutions. For example, we have steel framed wooden shipping containers that provide great protection to large cutaways since the felt covered bumpers lining the inside of the container keep a cutaway in place during the shipping process and the angle-iron material used on the frame and edges prevent a cutaway from getting damaged during long journeys. We also have international grade shipping containers that are made with fully tested stronger-than-wood materials (non-wood), which help get cutaways through customs smoothly and to their destinations on time. We also offer a multitude of cases varying in sizes and styles from handheld, soft sided cases to larger, dense foam interior cases.

From the type of cutaway you’re looking to create to the extra elements you may need to give your cutaway an extra oomph, we’ve got you covered.

  • How do I ship my cutaway?

Posted on August 17th, 2015 admin No comments

We all know what can happen to packages that get shipped through the mail—and larger packages tend to suffer even more abuse. So how do you carry your cutaway from one show to another without having it damaged as the fall trade show season quickly approaches? How can you transport and protect your trade show cutaway? With a custom permanent shipping container.

At CalCo, we create and offer different shipping container options. Our steel framed wooden shipping containers are durable because of the angle-iron material used on the frame and edges to prevent it from getting damaged during long journeys. The felt covered bumpers lining the inside of the container hold and keep a cutaway in place during the shipping process. Each container is custom-made to your trade show cutaway and is painted a bright blue color so it’s easy to locate amongst several shipping containers. The heavy duty hasps on our containers can be locked and secured to protect your cutaway. We also have international grade shipping containers that are made with fully tested stronger-than-wood materials (non-wood) that help get cutaways through customs smoothly and to their destinations on time.

Other additions to our shipping containers include custom holders for extra parts or literature, drawbridges for items on rolling stands, base mounts for displays, heat treatment for short-term international shipping and multiple product delivery.

If you have specific requirements regarding the shipment of your cutaway, contact us and we’ll work to get it packed and transported in a timely and safe matter. If your trade show cutaway is smaller, check out our durable custom cases. We offer a multitude of sizes and styles from handheld, soft sided cases to larger, dense foam interior cases. Our cases are available in rugged PVC, aluminum, wood, canvas, plastic and more.

Remember, the fall trade show season is right around the corner so it’s important to plan ahead and avoid rush charges by getting your cutaway created and shipped sooner rather than later.

    KYB

CalCo recently did a project for KYB, a leading manufacturer of hydraulic components for mobile equipment worldwide. KYB came to CalCo with their new product, a linear actuator, and CalCo designed an eye-catching color scheme for the product’s display and used a deluxe paint finish on the created model to make the product pop. CalCo’s deluxe finish requires hours of detailed hand work, which includes grinding and hand sanding a display’s surface smooth before a high-end glossy automotive paint finish completes the look.

CalCo also provided a professional and sturdy travel case for easy transportation of KYB’s new display piece. From the beginning steps of designing and building displays to the final stages of packaging and transferring finished projects, CalCo has a number of services available based on each customer’s customized needs.

    Bosch Rexroth

When Bosch Rexroth Corporation wanted to showcase its Rineer high torque vane-crossing-vane hydraulic motor unique to the world of fluid power, it chose CalCo to help showcase its product.

CalCo prepared the cutaway to Bosch Rexroth’s exact specifications and tolerances, highlighting the bi-rotational rotary power characteristics, which make this motor unique.

Special care was taken to provide a specific passageway paint scheme and custom plating solution to insure durability and longevity as this motor had an exhaustive world tour in its near future.

CalCo also designed and provided a custom case with die cut foam insert to house both the cutaway motor and its companion rotor-stator assembly as well. This case included a telescoping handle and recessed hardware to insure the motor and rotor-stator package would travel safely on its world tour.

  • Have You Seen the Detail In These Sales Sample Cases?

Posted on January 23rd, 2014 admin No comments

Your sales samples are about the most important part of your presentation to clients and potential clients, and showing up with them in a cardboard box is unacceptable in today’s competitive marketplace.

To get a long lasting sample case with a great look can be a lot more cost effective than you think. Individually cut compartments designed to fit exactly to your part, housed in a branded case with room for literature typically run from $75 to $200 each depending upon size, style and quantities, and we often make smaller cases for around $60 each (in quantity).

You have to know that a good salesperson, armed with the latest and greatest products and accessories that your company has to offer, is worth a minor investment that costs less than your typical smartphone.

Don’t wait, because the lead time is about the only obstacle to having a set of custom sales cases put together, and every sales call being made today . . . is either successful, or a missed opportunity.

  • Spring Trade Shows on the Horizon

Posted on March 20th, 2013 admin No comments

The spring trade show season is upon us and CalCo has been busy helping our customers prepare for successful shows. Some companies have been planning their booths since last spring while others are just getting started. At CalCo, we have found that the key to success at the shows is picking the right shows to attend and being prepared to present your message and your product in its best light. This can be accomplished by having a plan that includes professional displays and materials and that are enhanced and reinforced by knowledgeable salespeople.

In case you are thinking of expanding your current exhibition schedule, a brief summary of a few of the upcoming shows follows.

The Mid-America Truck Show or MATS, Louisville, KY,  March 21-23.  This show is for the heavy duty trucking industry.  We have been creating displays for this show for many years and we usually visit the show to see the displays in action. The type of displays is wide ranging.  We have seen complete trucks on display, engine cutaways, full length animation and 3-d models and we have made many of them ourselves.  The show has over 1,000 exhibitors and last year there were over 80,000 attendees from 77 countries.

Hannover Messe Show , Hannover Germany,  April 8-12.  It is billed as the world’s most important technology show and demonstrates new technology and automation. This years theme is integrated industry and there will be 11 trade fairs (Industrial automation, Motion/Drive & Automation, Energy, Wind, Mobilitec, Digital Factory, ComVac, Industrial Supply, Surface Technology, Industrial GreenTec, Research & Technology), occuring simultaneously with over 5,000 exhibitors and an expected 185,000 attendees. We are exhibiting at this show for the first time this year so if you will be there, let us know.

Bauma 2013, Munich, April 15-21.  International show for construction, building material and mining machines and vehicles. With 3,256 exhibitors and an expected 420,000 attendees it is a great opportunity to see some giant machines and make some good contacts. The show is structured around four sectors: All Around Construction Sites, Mining, Extraction & Processing of Raw Materials, Production of Building Materials and Component & Service Suppliers

Offshore Technology Conference, Houston, May 6-9.  The OTC show focuses on the development of offshore resources in the fields of drilling, exploration, production, and environmental protection. The  conference, geared toward energy professionals, offers a comprehensive technical program and exhibits of the latest products and services. With 2,500 exhibitors, 80,000+ attendees and 110 countries representated it is one of the top 200 shows in the US.  We create displays for this show every year which have included,  underground cable cutaways embedded in acrylic, pump cutaways and displays, valves, regulators, couplers, cables, scale models, working models and display stands.  We usually visit the show to see what is new in the industry and it is always fascinating.

Electric Power Expo, Rosemont, IL,  May 14-16.  Over 5,000 power generation industry professionals from around the world attend.  The show, directed towards plant management and corporate personnel from utilities around the world,  is dedicated to each of the leading fuels – coal, gas, nuclear and renewable energy, and multiple tracks filled with cross-cutting content like environmental regulations and technology. TSNN (Trade Show News Network) reports an increase of 3% for 2012 over 2011 and the much improved levels of foot traffic at shows is quite obvious. According to the 2012 Pulse Survey, conducted for the Exhibition and Convention Executives Forum, 58 percent of trade shows reported growth in the number of exhibitors in 2012, with only 12 percent reporting a decline, all indications that the trade show circuit is kicking back into high gear ….. so call CalCo at 847-639-3858 and let us help you plan ahead!
