  • 3D Models and Printing

Posted on August 19th, 2016 admin No comments

3D printing is the process of making a physical object or model from a digital file by using a printing machine that typically layers many thin pieces of material. 3D printing is used for rapid prototyping and manufacturing. It’s a modern method of manufacturing solid objects that is cost and time efficient because people can email their digital files to get printed, the creation of models is at a much lower cost than a traditional machine, and the materials are sturdier and more adaptable which opens up a wider range of uses.

Whether you need a lightweight display, scale model, prototype or part, CalCo Cutaways has the ability to turn your digital dream into a reality and make your product happen with our 3D printing services. With a computer-aided design (CAD) file, we can create accurate models of your product in full size or scaled down dimensions. A variety of options (colors, sizes, materials) are available, and printing can be done in as little as a day. This allows our customers to market their products faster and sell the features of their products without investing in high production, shipping and display costs.

No CAD file available? We can use the actual parts of your product to make a lightweight copy of the original. Once it’s painted, it is difficult to tell the difference between the original and the copy until you lift it up.

3D models are real objects that are great for training since they show the product’s components, provide hands-on experience, and promote tactile learning. The product is real, visible and much easier to understand whether it’s a prototype, scaled down model or actual sized product.

Sometimes all it takes to close a sale is for a customer to see and understand your product. A cutaway sample can be an ideal sales aid in that situation.   Cutaways are often used in a trade show environment but can be very effective as sales tools too.

CalCo creates cutaways that highlight your product’s unique attributes so your customer can see and understand what sets your product and your company apart from its competitors.  We protect them in sales cases with custom high density foam,  wheels and handles for ease of movement and logos or signage can be added for easy identification so your salespeople will look professional while transporting your product.  If your product is too large or heavy we can make a lightweight, full color 3-D model of it instead which can also be encased.  We can quote in any quantity from one to several hundred.

  • Industrial Scale Model Lights Up the Show

Posted on July 25th, 2013 admin No comments

For years designers have used lifelike scale models to demonstrate a new building project or large scale installation. The power of scale makes it easier to visualize the finished project before it begins. Making changes and describing details becomes easy and in many cases saves countless hours and dollars. A 3D representation is much easier for most people to understand and there is little need for collateral materials.

When SPX needed a way to show the complex details of a system installation, they called upon CalCo to create a scaled-down representation of how this solution looks. Starting with a 3D file and some line drawings (see below), CalCo was able to recreate this virtual rendering in the real world, to a predetermined scale. With many of the feature components and solutions spanning multiple floors and rooms, removing some of the walls was going to be mandatory, and removing all of them it turns out, was even better. The model can be used at trade shows, customer meetings or wherever a demonstration of the system is needed

As the display was developing, it became apparent that a solution would be needed to light up the shadowed rooms and further accentuate the details of the installation. The final model came in at around 25 lbs., and included a clear acrylic cover to provide maximum protection while on display.

  • Spring Trade Shows on the Horizon

Posted on March 20th, 2013 admin No comments

The spring trade show season is upon us and CalCo has been busy helping our customers prepare for successful shows. Some companies have been planning their booths since last spring while others are just getting started. At CalCo, we have found that the key to success at the shows is picking the right shows to attend and being prepared to present your message and your product in its best light. This can be accomplished by having a plan that includes professional displays and materials and that are enhanced and reinforced by knowledgeable salespeople.

In case you are thinking of expanding your current exhibition schedule, a brief summary of a few of the upcoming shows follows.

The Mid-America Truck Show or MATS, Louisville, KY,  March 21-23.  This show is for the heavy duty trucking industry.  We have been creating displays for this show for many years and we usually visit the show to see the displays in action. The type of displays is wide ranging.  We have seen complete trucks on display, engine cutaways, full length animation and 3-d models and we have made many of them ourselves.  The show has over 1,000 exhibitors and last year there were over 80,000 attendees from 77 countries.

Hannover Messe Show , Hannover Germany,  April 8-12.  It is billed as the world’s most important technology show and demonstrates new technology and automation. This years theme is integrated industry and there will be 11 trade fairs (Industrial automation, Motion/Drive & Automation, Energy, Wind, Mobilitec, Digital Factory, ComVac, Industrial Supply, Surface Technology, Industrial GreenTec, Research & Technology), occuring simultaneously with over 5,000 exhibitors and an expected 185,000 attendees. We are exhibiting at this show for the first time this year so if you will be there, let us know.

Bauma 2013, Munich, April 15-21.  International show for construction, building material and mining machines and vehicles. With 3,256 exhibitors and an expected 420,000 attendees it is a great opportunity to see some giant machines and make some good contacts. The show is structured around four sectors: All Around Construction Sites, Mining, Extraction & Processing of Raw Materials, Production of Building Materials and Component & Service Suppliers

Offshore Technology Conference, Houston, May 6-9.  The OTC show focuses on the development of offshore resources in the fields of drilling, exploration, production, and environmental protection. The  conference, geared toward energy professionals, offers a comprehensive technical program and exhibits of the latest products and services. With 2,500 exhibitors, 80,000+ attendees and 110 countries representated it is one of the top 200 shows in the US.  We create displays for this show every year which have included,  underground cable cutaways embedded in acrylic, pump cutaways and displays, valves, regulators, couplers, cables, scale models, working models and display stands.  We usually visit the show to see what is new in the industry and it is always fascinating.

Electric Power Expo, Rosemont, IL,  May 14-16.  Over 5,000 power generation industry professionals from around the world attend.  The show, directed towards plant management and corporate personnel from utilities around the world,  is dedicated to each of the leading fuels – coal, gas, nuclear and renewable energy, and multiple tracks filled with cross-cutting content like environmental regulations and technology. There will be over 150 exhibitors  and attendees from 31 countries and 47 US states.

American Water Works Assn Annual Conference and Exposition (ACE 13), Denver, June 9-13.  Designed for Water professionals there are over 900 presenters on a variety of water-related topics and 500 exhibitors from all segments of the water industry.

These are just a few of the shows that CalCo will be visiting soon. Once again trade show attendance is increasing. TSNN (Trade Show News Network) reports an increase of 3% for 2012 over 2011 and the much improved levels of foot traffic at shows is quite obvious. According to the 2012 Pulse Survey, conducted for the Exhibition and Convention Executives Forum, 58 percent of trade shows reported growth in the number of exhibitors in 2012, with only 12 percent reporting a decline, all indications that the trade show circuit is kicking back into high gear ….. so call CalCo at 847-639-3858 and let us help you plan ahead!

  • Your Lightweight 3-D Displays: From a Drawing to Reality

Posted on August 12th, 2011 admin No comments

Are you getting hammered by shipping costs to get your industrial sized displays to trade shows and back? Is the weight, pun intended, of moving your displays becoming tiresome? CalCo has an alternative solution for you and how you display your products; and it’s easier than you may think…

It all starts with a CAD(computer aided drawing) file of your product. Once we are provided with this file we can scale it down to your liking and produce a light weight 3D model for you to tell the story of your new innovating and/or always reliable product. Models are created out of a very durable ABS plastic using a Fuel Deposition Modeling method, know as FDM.

Shown below are two pump models that we recently created for a client.

3-D Pump Model 2Vertical Pump Model

All of the individual part files are printed separately and then built into an assembly using very little glue and mostly scale-version fasteners. You can see some of the parts were printed in color to highlight specific components and areas of the pump to describe features to potential users. These two units normally weigh hundreds of pounds each and can now be brought to a show in carry-on luggage!!

To get started, simply email CalCo your 3D files for a quick and helpful quotation or to discuss the opportunities that are possible today.

For more information call CalCo at 847/639-3858.   Click Here for an article with information about other lightweight options or click here for more contact information.

  • Frequently Asked Questions about CalCo Cutaways

Posted on September 29th, 2010 admin No comments

How much do CalCo’s services cost?

Each project is different and is priced according to man hours involved, materials for bases, shipping containers or electrical parts, and outside services like plating.  We provide quotes based upon our estimates of time and material to do each job.

    How long does it take?

A good rule of thumb is to plan ahead. Some projects can be turned around in a week or two, and some can be 90 days, depending upon the project. When production levels are high, lead times are longer, and it is always a good idea to get a no obligation quote in advance.  Our average turnaround time is 4-6 weeks but it is entirely dependent on our schedule at the time that your project arrives.   If necessary and if physically possible, we will adjust our schedule to meet yours and once we commit to a delivery date, you can count on it.

What do you need from me to provide a quote for my cutaway project?

The best and most effective way is to send the part with a description of the work you want done.   If your product or part is very large, transportation can be difficult, so typically we like to have a dimensional drawing along with weights and the primary materials of the product (carbon steel, stainless, aluminum, etc.)   A photo of the product is always helpful as well, along with a description of the areas you are looking to feature.  With this information we can provide an accurate estimate, which can be confirmed upon receipt of the actual product.

How do I specify where to cut on my product?

Generally, you will receive the best cutaways if you tell us what features you want to show and leave the specific cutting designs to our skilled technicians. They have the knowledge and experience to show and retain components in such a way as to show what you want in the best and least expensive way. We strive to show as much as possible in one view with as simple a cut as possible.

If I can do all or some of the work in-house, shouldn’t I?

There are three ways of looking at this question:
Financially: Because we specialize in making cutaways and displays, we are pretty darn good (and efficient) at it. Therefore, it generally takes our experts less time to do a cutaway so we are almost always less expensive than full or even incremental in-house costs.

Quality Control: We provide all cutting, clearancing, finishing and final fitting, plus basemounts and shipping containers. All these services must be coordinated, anticipating the needs of the others. At Calco you get a one stop shop that will handle all of these needs for you. We have the tools necessary to do the job right and the expertise and knowledge to make it look great.

Resources: Just because you can do something doesn’t mean that it is the best use of your resources (time and talent). Most companies are continuously assessing what they should and can do well, and then outsourcing the rest.

What else can CalCo do for me besides cutaways?

    • Working Models
    • Custom Stands and Basemounts
    • Lighting
    • Custom Fit Cases
    • Custom Fit Permanent Shipping Containers

Do you have large products to display at your next trade show?  Are the logistics of moving them around getting to you?  CalCo has some options for displaying your large products in a memorable way.  We offer animation, scale models or large scale printing as alternative options for your large products.

Our animation can show your product in action and it can be completely interactive for your customers.   They can choose whether to start or stop the animation and what information will help them or the animation can play continously.  Additional literature can also be accessed to provide more detailed information.  Our unique perspective on the way products work and the cutaway process give us good insight in to what your customer wants to see and how to achieve it.  The beauty of animation is that it can be used in multiple environments – at a trade show, on your website or on sales calls.
