(Training cutaway from CalCo provides a hands-on reference)

Technician training is a crucial component of any successful project or installation.

Proper maintenance and upkeep of equipment keeps it running and out of the service area. If this equipment does reach the service department, you want it back to running condition quickly as well.

Hands on training and technician familiarity with your machinery can make or break profitability. Keep your process firing on all cylinders by keeping your equipment in great working order.

CalCo creates visual training cutaways that bring your students up to speed more quickly, giving them a familiarity with the product on a visual and tactical level.

Text books and manuals can only go so far, but a wide-open cutaway, showing how and why everything works together the way it does, speeds up understanding and brings together many ideas.

An investment in education can save tens of thousands of dollars in lost production, broken equipment and inefficient service departments. Protect your equipment and speed up your reaction times with training cutaways.

  • Fire Hydrant & Pump Cutaway for Ohio Training School

Posted on February 10th, 2017 admin No comments

CalCo Cutaways completed a project for a fire training school in Ohio. We created a fire hydrant cutaway and a motorized pump cutaway, and put each one on its own rolling stand so it’s easy to move and transport when used for training.

The pump was rescued from an old fire truck. Full color coding was painted on the pump cutaway to show the water flow path. The pump panel was included to allow for the actuation of the valves. The pump cutaway is also motorized to show what a driver that’s connected to the pump looks like when it’s activated.

Firefighters use fire hydrant and pump cutaways to educate and empower their teams. These tangible training models provide firsthand instruction to firefighters so they learn and have a better understanding on the internal structures of hydrants and pumps—two of the most important tools firefighters use on the job. These cutaways provide hands-on experience and help firefighters visualize how a hydrant and pump’s internal components look and fit together. By knowing how each one works, firefighters can boost their confidence and strengthen their efficiency in the field.

  • Cutaway FAQ

Posted on May 6th, 2016 admin No comments

    What is a cutaway?

A cutaway is a model or display that shows the advantages, internal components, and functions of a product. Cutaways are unique tools that differentiate a product from the crowd and they’re great to use at trade shows, trainings and more.

What are the benefits of using a cutaway for a business?

A cutaway is a great visual and interactive tool for employees in training, potential customers, and any other parties interested in your product. A cutaway highlights the advantages of a product including what it will look like, the quality of the materials inside and how the actual parts of the product function so a person is able to see, interact with, and learn about your product’s purpose.

What is the process like to create a cutaway?

A cutaway is made by first disassembling the product’s interior parts and cleaning them. Once the parts have been cleaned and reassembled, the cutting begins. It’s important to slice the cutaway with a technique that maximizes the visibility of the interior parts and its functions, without altering or damaging the product. Once the cutting is completed, the cutaway is painted with an eye-catching color scheme to highlight various parts of the product.

What are CalCo’s capabilities regarding cutaways?

We do everything from the design and development of a cutaway to the physical cutting of the product—we’re capable of cutting virtually any material of any thickness—to the painting of the finished product. The sky is the limit. We’re open to new innovations and are passionate about producing unique cutaways that our customers love and are 100% satisfied with.

    What is CalCo’s turnaround time?

Turnaround time varies based on the size of the project and our schedule, but typical turnaround is four to six weeks. We will adjust our schedule to meet your deadline needs whenever possible. The best and most effective way for us to get a project done is to have as much information as possible regarding the cutaway design. For example, sending the part(s) and description of work to be done on the part(s), any images with scale and weight information, and the type of materials to use on the project will be extremely helpful in not only creating the perfect cutaway you envisioned, but speeding up the communication process so we can get into production. The more details and information provided for the project, the better. And remember, we enjoy and are always willing to get involved with the design and development process.

How does CalCo ship a cutaway?

We offer different shipping container solutions. For example, we have steel framed wooden shipping containers that provide great protection to large cutaways since the felt covered bumpers lining the inside of the container keep a cutaway in place during the shipping process and the angle-iron material used on the frame and edges prevent a cutaway from getting damaged during long journeys. We also have international grade shipping containers that are made with fully tested stronger-than-wood materials (non-wood), which help get cutaways through customs smoothly and to their destinations on time. We also offer a multitude of cases varying in sizes and styles from handheld, soft sided cases to larger, dense foam interior cases.

From the type of cutaway you’re looking to create to the extra elements you may need to give your cutaway an extra oomph, we’ve got you covered.

  • How cutaways help in training employees

Posted on October 5th, 2015 admin No comments

Did you know cutaways are first-rate training tools that educate and empower your team?

Although modern technology and digital software help employees-in-training envision the internals of manufactured products, cutaways surpass digital tools because they are tangible and provide firsthand instruction.

Cutaways are real physical models that are great for employee training because they provide hands-on experience and help visualize how a product’s internal components will look and fit together. Cutaways are especially useful to engineers and repair specialists since they show how the actual product parts will function. Cutaways promote tactile learning as employees are educated and proficient on the unique mechanisms and factors through physical models. The functionality of a product is real, visible and much easier to understand verses a digital visual since cutaways nicely showcase and demonstrate the internals of a product in a tangible and digestible way.

    training-cutaway

Below are examples of what cutaways can demonstrate and accomplish for a variety of products:

With valves, seeing the type of packing and quality of the seal are critical.
With electric motors, studying the fasteners is essential.
With engines, examining the pistons and crankshaft are crucial.
With transmissions, observing the strength and durability of the gear sets are vital.
With gearboxes, detecting the internal design of the gears is important.
With pumps, spotting the impeller design is key.

Let’s take a look at how firefighters use cutaways. Firefighters learn about the internals of a fire hydrant or pump through fire hydrant and pump cutaways. By studying a hydrant or pump cutaway closely, firefighters increase their knowledge on the two most important tools they use on the job, develop a better understanding of how each product works, and strengthen their efficiency in the field.

Cutaways are unparalleled for employee training because they highlight some of the strongest human senses—sight and touch. Because people are visual beings, using cutaways as a teaching method increase knowledge and understanding in manufactured products and boost confidence in employees. Through cutaways, employees attain a vast amount of valuable information that is only possible to gain through physical prototypes. To view our work, check out our gallery of cutaways.

  • What are gearbox cutaways and how are they are used?

Posted on September 3rd, 2015 admin No comments

A gearbox is a mechanical gadget within a vehicle that has a set of gears to operate at different speeds, converting the engine’s energy to the appropriate wheel speed for the road. It is also known as the transmission.

But what are the components of a transmission system? What does it look like? What do the different gears do? To identify the working parts of a transmission system, a gearbox cutaway is needed. A gearbox cutaway is a display of the transmission, carefully sectioned for training purposes to highlight the different parts of the system involved and better understand each gear’s functions.

    transmission cutaway

Similar to other cutaways, gearbox cutaways are made by first disassembling the car’s transmission and cleaning each part. Cutting begins after the parts have been cleaned and reassembled. Once the cutting is completed, the cutaway is painted with an eye-catching color scheme to highlight the various gears and functions of the transmission.

Gearbox cutaways are a great training tool to show off the inner workings of a vehicle’s transmission and get a clearer understanding of how one internal component works and is part of the whole vehicle’s operating system. Gearbox cutaways take a lot of time and attention to detail to be built properly, but can be a great addition to a tradeshow or training to help clients better comprehend your product’s internal structure.

  • Pratt & Whitney PT6 Engine Cutaway of a Mainstay Available Now

Posted on February 4th, 2015 admin No comments

    IMG_0110

The Pratt & Whitney PT6 turbine engine in the one of the most popular turboprop engines in history. The PT6 was first put into use in 1964 and is still in production today. This versatile and stable engine design can be found in turboprop airplanes, helicopters, amphibious planes, military aircraft, aerial application planes, Short takeoff and Landing (STOL) aircraft and many more.

The versatility of this engine and the extremely high reliability has made the PT6 a mainstay in the design and manufacturing of small aircraft the world over. The concepts and characteristics of this engine make it a perfect tool for explaining the general concepts and component design of a turboprop engine. A limiting factor historically with creating display engines for use in the classroom or on the show floor is that the engines last so long that a full engine, out of service, is very difficult to find. Parts are reused on further engines, and the lifelong journey of various production parts can span decades.

CalCo, in conjunction with Aerovision International, a leading aircraft and engine service provider, have produced a full cutaway version of the legendary PT6 engine as shown here. The fully exposed engine system shows everything from the 3-stage axial and single stage centrifugal compressors, to the turbines, gears and burners. Color coding is used to help clarify heating and cooling zones through the engine phases.

    IMG_0106IMG_0104IMG_0105IMG_0112

Explaining the properties and functionality of the PT6 as well as overall turboprop design concepts is easy with this fantastic tool. Cutaways like these are as rare as the availability of an out of service PT6, and require the expertise of skilled craftspeople to bring into reality.

For a limited time this exact engine is available for purchase, and with the high demand and low availability of a PT6 cutaway, it will surely be gone in a hurry. The cutaway includes the texture black welded steel rolling engine stand shown, as well as a steel framed shipping container with hinged steel drawbridge style ramp.
