  • Expose Your Product With A Cutaway

Posted on April 10th, 2014 admin No comments

Yamaha completely exposed their technology at the Miami Boat show with a new cutaway of their F200 Outboard Engine. The cutaway allows customers to see the interior configuration of the engine and understand how it works.  The different passageways are painted in different colors to provide a clear understanding of how different fluids and air travel through the system.   The display is great for attracting attention and is a good conversation starter with customers, plus it just looks cool!

The entire booth was awesome and the video below features some equally awesome cutaways by CalCo that make a cameo (Can you spot them?)

  • Disaster Victim Brought Back to Life

Posted on September 12th, 2013 admin No comments

Looking at the display above would you guess that it was recently completely rebuilt? We received a box of damaged parts because the display was dropped and broken beyond recognition during shipping. The pieces were gathered and sent to CalCo to repair, refinish and reassemble. As you can see from the finished product you can’t even tell that the display was damaged and we were able to complete the project quickly so it didn’t miss a single trade show. We also made a sturdy shipper which will stand up to repeated use and is custom designed for the display to deter any more mishaps.

Call CalCo at 847-639-3858 if you have had a shipping disaster and need a new shipper or a display rework.  We will be happy to give you a free quote. Visit our website at www.calcocutaways.com or visit us on Facebook to find out more about CalCo and how we can make you and your product look good.

  • An Indian Motorcycle Engine Cutaway That Towers Over the Rest

Posted on April 25th, 2013 admin No comments

Indian Motorcycle just launched their new Thunderstroke 111 Engine in March, 2013 at Bike Week in Daytona and CalCo Cutaways was proud to help with this impressive product launch.  We were thrilled to work on the cutaway of this new engine.  Polaris and Indian Motors contacted us early in the planning stages because they required high end finishes and workmanship and we were proud we could deliver it.  The new 49-degree V-Twin engine is air-cooled with integrated oil cooler, left-side air intake, down firing exhaust system and parallel pushrod tubes. As you can see it is a beautiful design with performance and longevity in mind.

“The Thunder Stroke 111 marks yet another critical milestone in the company’s persistent drive towards a full launch later this year under the stewardship of Polaris Industries…the goal was to capture the iconic design and styling aspects of the 112-year old brand’s most historic models and fuse that heritage with state-of-the-art technology and progressive design elements. The new design reflects an unparalleled investment into researching the complete history of Indian Motorcycle power train development.”

  • Is your trade show booth ready for Mid-America Truck Show (MATS), Offshore Technology Conference(OTC), Hannover Messe or the Bauma Show?

Posted on March 7th, 2013 admin No comments

Over the past few years, some companies have changed focus and are attending either the larger trade shows or more specialized trade shows instead of going to a wide range of shows each year.   That makes the shows that ARE attended that much more important and makes show preparation a crucial component of success.  At CalCo we try to stress the importance of early planning. Before your show, you need to analyze the message you want to convey and what kind of product displays, signage and other materials can help you communicate your message in an effective manner and then give yourself adequate time to create and acquire the right materials.

While we live in a world where we expect quick turnarounds and instanteous gratification, unfortunately, all trade show displays cannot be turned around immediately.  We get frustrated if we can’t give a customer the exact display they want due to time constraints and the customer gets frustrated too.  This problem can be avoided with early planning.  How early?? That depends on the type of display you need, the show you are attending and the time of year.

The type of display will partly dictate the time needed for show preparation. Some small displays and cutaways can be turned around in a short time but the majority of the work we do requires 4-8 weeks. Most cutaway jobs require disassembly, cutting of each piece, painting, reassembly, creation of a custom base or stand, creation of a custom shipper.  We pride ourselves on our quality so we take the time to make sure your display lives up to your expectations and our expectations.  For other types of displays like lightweight models, 3-D printing and animation the length of time necessary depends on the complexity of the project and can vary from a few days to a few months. Advance planning will help you get the results that you need from the shows you attend.

In addition to the time it takes to create your display, you need to consider shipping time too.  While most destinations in the US can be reached in a few days, if necessary, the charge for expedited shipping can be high.  For international destinations, weeks can be required if your display is going by ship instead of flying.  Make sure you consider the time necessary for transportation when getting ready for your show.

Finally, the time of year can affect your trade show planning schedule since most shows occur in the spring and fall.  During these times our turnaround times can be longer due to the volume.  If we can’t meet your deadline than we won’t take your business.  We don’t like to disappoint our customers.

If you need a display for an upcoming show and need an indication of turnaround times or types of displays that we can create, just give us a call. We are happy to help with your planning process so that you can have a successful show. We will be visiting the Mid-America Truck Show (MATS), Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) and Hannover Messe in the next few months. Let us know if you will be there too and we will stop by your booth.

  • Look at these Dazzling Cutaway Displays of Polished Stainless Steel and Chrome!

Posted on November 29th, 2012 admin No comments

These displays are designed to catch your customers attention and keep it. The stainless steel and chrome practically glow when highly hand polished. The finish is labor intensive but the effect is well worth it.

These strainers were cutaway to show the interior so the customer can see the high quality of the construction and design.  The interior was painted and the stainless parts were hand polished to create the bright finish.  The displays were fitted to bases and then into cases with custom foam inserts so they are easily moved without getting damaged.  All of these services were provided by CalCo with a careful eye on the details. Our goal is to make you and your product look great.

In addition to polished chrome plating and stainless steel finishing we offer the following plating finishes:

    • Gold Plating
    • Copper Plating
    • Nickel Plating
    • Industrial Hard Plating
    • Anodizing – an attractive way to prepare aluminum and available in a wide variety of colors
    • Electroless nickel – durable, minimal build process with even cover, good lubricity and hardness
    • Chrome Plating – available in bright chrome, polished chrome or satin finishes, can be applied to any metal
    • Black Oxide – for steel or iron parts where a blue/black matte finish is desired

If you want to make your display stand out from the crowd just give CalCo a call at 847/639-3858 and we can give you some great ideas! You can see examples of the various finishes on our website at www.calcocutaways.com.

  • Cutaways: Useful for Every Type of Product Display

Posted on October 2nd, 2012 admin No comments

CalCo has been making cutaways for close to sixty years.  Despite the advances in technology that have affected the trade show industry, cutaways are still a strong and widely used way to show your products advantages.  Not only is your product the star of the show but the attributes of your product that you are highlighting to your customers are completely visible. Usually the best part of the product is what is hidden inside and invisible to the eye and a cutaway is a great way to put the interior attributes of your product on display. Your product can be seen, touched and understood.   Giving your customer a chance to see the parts and processes of your product that make it superior to your competition. We can light it up, color code it with paint or make it move to further demonstrate your products advantages. Our goal is to make you and your product look great!

    Some recent examples of cutaways:

  • Demonstrate a Brand New or Existing Product Line Without the Actual Parts

Posted on August 21st, 2012 admin No comments

Let’s say you are developing a new product line and you do not have all the parts in full production yet but would like to have a unit to present or unveil to the public, we have that solution. Or you simply want to cut down the weight of your display without losing the overall aesthetic of the product, we have that solution too.

The solution is a full scale model or partial model with individual parts made from light weight plastic, which can be surface finished, including hand sanding and painting, and built together as you would your typical product. Real parts can be incorporated with the finished plastic parts, if desired, and it is hard to tell the difference between the parts made from the two types of materials.

Below is a recent example from a compressor manufacturer that needed prototype parts created for a new display since they were not in full production yet.  We created the missing parts from plastic composite using CAD files. The parts were then cut, sanded, painted, and fit into the actual compressor as if they were the real metal parts and then we created a new cutaway display.  Looking at the pictures below it is hard to tell which are the prototype parts made from plastic and which are the real metal parts.

At CalCo we work to find solutions to display your product in its best light.  If you have a project that you would like to discuss just give CalCo a call at 847/639-3858. You can also visit us on Facebook or at www.CalCoCutaways.com.

With the spring trade show season in full swing you may wonder why we are talking about the fall already. During and right after a show is the best time to reevaluate your displays and how successful they are at telling your story to your customers. It is also a good opportunity to take a closer look and see whether they need to be reworked or touched up.  Instead of putting them back in the box and back in storage until the next show,  save on shipping by having them sent directly from the show to CalCo.  We  will work on them over the summer and by Fall you will be ready to shine at your next show. CalCo can make your current display look better than ever or we can create a new one.  We can rework, touch up, re-plate, add lighting, add signage, change/add basemounts or stands, repair or replace shippers.  Just tell us what you want to do and we will make it happen!

Even if your display has been damaged in transit like the photos below, CalCo can help. Call us at 847-639-3858 or visit our website or Facebook pages to see how we can help you today.

  • Make Your Product Display Shine with Custom Plating

A well done product display can be the difference between catching your customers attention at a trade show and having him walk right on by. The qualities of your product, the knowledge of your salesmen and your reputation will all make the sale but it helps to have an eye-catching display to draw people in to your booth. One way to differentiate your product and make it shine is through plating.  The metal components on our displays are usually plated but you can hike up the drama with some real sparkle using polished chrome or gold plating. As you can see in the pictures above the plating adds an extra gleam and excitement to your display.

We offer a variety of plating options and we work with many types of parts and products. Some of the plating options are:

    Plating Finishes

    • Anodizing – an attractive way to prepare aluminum and available in a wide variety of colors
    • Electroless nickel – durable, minimal build process with even cover, good lubricity and hardness
    • Metal Plating – Copper, Nickel, Gold plating and industrial hard plating is available
    • Chrome Plating – available in bright chrome, polished chrome or satin finishes and can be applied to any metal
    • Black Oxide – for steel or iron parts where a blue/black matte finish is desired

If you need plating, want to rework an old display or need a new display,  just give CalCo a call at 847/639-3858 or click here for more contact information.  You can visit us on Facebook too.

  • Dave Kasper, CalCo’s Senior Consultant, Has ALL the Answers

Posted on April 7th, 2011 admin No comments

    Dave

CalCo has been in business for almost 60 years. The reason – the people who work here and their dedication to getting a job done right and on time.   Dave Kasper, our Sales Manager, is a key component in our success.  Dave has been with CalCo for 9 years and has become indispensable due to his ability to come up with new and innovative ideas and to work with our customers to make sure they get exactly what they want.  Talking to Dave on the phone can turn a project around completely because he not only quotes, coordinates and communicates with you about your project but he also develops new ways to display them.  Recently he designed a large pedestal with multiple levels of display space which we constructed based on his designs.  He also developed a waterjet cut acrylic fire hydrant for a display which was lightweight and easy to transport.  He has designed many point of purchase layouts and has helped customers develop animation, 3D models, prototypes, displays and cutaways of every type. Although we have an archive with all projects we have completed it is sometimes easier to go and pick Dave’s brain.

Some of Dave’s ideas are shown above and some of his beliefs are explained below.

    What is CalCo’s first priority?

    Customer satisfaction.

What makes CalCo different from its competitors?

Honestly CalCo is one of those places that is more like a consulting firm for your marketing, sales and training departments. It is difficult to know about so many technologies and possibilities for your displays, and it is nice to be able to speak with someone who can offer suggestions that you may have never thought of otherwise.

What information do you need to know before beginning a project?

The first place we like to start is getting a good understanding of where your displays will be used, and in what context. Is this a training seminar, a trade show exhibit or a sales tool for road warriors, etc. . . Next is what story are you looking to tell with your project; how a product works, what the new upgrades look like and what they mean or even “We are number 1″! Once we get into the finer details and pricing/timing estimates, we will need some drawings or photos with dimensions to get started. From there we will take care of everything else, from asking additional questions, providing examples where needed and nailing down the shipping details in advance of that glorious day!

Whether you have a good idea of the type of display that you want or you need some good ideas, Dave can help.    For a free quote or to discuss your next project contact CalCo at 847/638-3858 or click here for more information.
