    What is a cutaway?

A cutaway is a model or display that shows the advantages, internal components, and functions of a product. Cutaways are unique tools that differentiate a product from the crowd and they’re great to use at trade shows, trainings and more.

What are the benefits of using a cutaway for a business?

A cutaway is a great visual and interactive tool for employees in training, potential customers, and any other parties interested in your product. A cutaway highlights the advantages of a product including what it will look like, the quality of the materials inside and how the actual parts of the product function so a person is able to see, interact with, and learn about your product’s purpose.

What is the process like to create a cutaway?

A cutaway is made by first disassembling the product’s interior parts and cleaning them. Once the parts have been cleaned and reassembled, the cutting begins. It’s important to slice the cutaway with a technique that maximizes the visibility of the interior parts and its functions, without altering or damaging the product. Once the cutting is completed, the cutaway is painted with an eye-catching color scheme to highlight various parts of the product.

What are CalCo’s capabilities regarding cutaways?

We do everything from the design and development of a cutaway to the physical cutting of the product—we’re capable of cutting virtually any material of any thickness—to the painting of the finished product. The sky is the limit. We’re open to new innovations and are passionate about producing unique cutaways that our customers love and are 100% satisfied with.

    What is CalCo’s turnaround time?

Turnaround time varies based on the size of the project and our schedule, but typical turnaround is four to six weeks. We will adjust our schedule to meet your deadline needs whenever possible. The best and most effective way for us to get a project done is to have as much information as possible regarding the cutaway design. For example, sending the part(s) and description of work to be done on the part(s), any images with scale and weight information, and the type of materials to use on the project will be extremely helpful in not only creating the perfect cutaway you envisioned, but speeding up the communication process so we can get into production. The more details and information provided for the project, the better. And remember, we enjoy and are always willing to get involved with the design and development process.

How does CalCo ship a cutaway?

We offer different shipping container solutions. For example, we have steel framed wooden shipping containers that provide great protection to large cutaways since the felt covered bumpers lining the inside of the container keep a cutaway in place during the shipping process and the angle-iron material used on the frame and edges prevent a cutaway from getting damaged during long journeys. We also have international grade shipping containers that are made with fully tested stronger-than-wood materials (non-wood), which help get cutaways through customs smoothly and to their destinations on time. We also offer a multitude of cases varying in sizes and styles from handheld, soft sided cases to larger, dense foam interior cases.

From the type of cutaway you’re looking to create to the extra elements you may need to give your cutaway an extra oomph, we’ve got you covered.

  • How are design cutaways made?

Posted on July 6th, 2015 admin No comments

Design cutaways highlight the advantages of a product including what it will look like, the quality of the materials inside and how the actual parts of the product function. As a result, training or trade show cutaways can take a long time to make. Between planning the design, building the cutaway and packaging/shipping the model off to a trade show or training, it can take several weeks or more to complete the process from start to finish.

Design cutaways are made by first disassembling the product’s interior parts and cleaning them. Once the parts have been cleaned and reassembled, the cutting begins. It’s important to slice the cutaway with a technique that maximizes the visibility of the interior parts and its functions, but without altering or damaging them. Saws, grinders and other cutting tools may be used to slice the cutaway.

Once the cutting is completed, the design cutaway will be painted with an eye-catching color scheme to highlight the various parts of the product. There are usually different types of paint finishes to choose from. At CalCo, for example, the deluxe finish is one paint type that takes hours of detailed hand work, grinding and hand sanding a display’s surface smooth before a high-end glossy paint is used.

Once painting is completed, packaging and transporting the design cutaway are the final steps. Depending on the size of the cutaway and where it’s going, customized carrying cases for smaller cutaways or customized shipping containers for bigger ones will help transport design cutaways from one place to another in a damage-free, protected setting.

Design cutaways take a lot of time and care to be built properly. But with the right plan and processes, a high quality cutaway can be made and displayed at your tradeshow or training by the time you need it. At CalCo, we offer a number of services—from the beginning steps of designing and building to the final stages of packaging and transferring—to give you the perfect design cutaway based on your needs. For more information about our design cutaways, call us at 847.639.3858, email us at charles@calcocutaways.com or fill out our form here.

  • Pratt & Whitney PT6 Engine Cutaway of a Mainstay Available Now

Posted on February 4th, 2015 admin No comments

    IMG_0110

The Pratt & Whitney PT6 turbine engine in the one of the most popular turboprop engines in history. The PT6 was first put into use in 1964 and is still in production today. This versatile and stable engine design can be found in turboprop airplanes, helicopters, amphibious planes, military aircraft, aerial application planes, Short takeoff and Landing (STOL) aircraft and many more.

The versatility of this engine and the extremely high reliability has made the PT6 a mainstay in the design and manufacturing of small aircraft the world over. The concepts and characteristics of this engine make it a perfect tool for explaining the general concepts and component design of a turboprop engine. A limiting factor historically with creating display engines for use in the classroom or on the show floor is that the engines last so long that a full engine, out of service, is very difficult to find. Parts are reused on further engines, and the lifelong journey of various production parts can span decades.

CalCo, in conjunction with Aerovision International, a leading aircraft and engine service provider, have produced a full cutaway version of the legendary PT6 engine as shown here. The fully exposed engine system shows everything from the 3-stage axial and single stage centrifugal compressors, to the turbines, gears and burners. Color coding is used to help clarify heating and cooling zones through the engine phases.

    IMG_0106IMG_0104IMG_0105IMG_0112

Explaining the properties and functionality of the PT6 as well as overall turboprop design concepts is easy with this fantastic tool. Cutaways like these are as rare as the availability of an out of service PT6, and require the expertise of skilled craftspeople to bring into reality.

For a limited time this exact engine is available for purchase, and with the high demand and low availability of a PT6 cutaway, it will surely be gone in a hurry. The cutaway includes the texture black welded steel rolling engine stand shown, as well as a steel framed shipping container with hinged steel drawbridge style ramp.
